Construction of Rwanda's ambitious $2 billion Kigali International Airport is progressing steadily in the Bugesera district, following some interruptions due to design alterations to enhance the airport's size and quality.

The current phase of construction focuses on key horizontal infrastructure elements such as runways, drainage concrete works, earthwork platforms, aircraft parking areas, connecting taxiways, and internal service roads.

Situated about 40 kilometers south of Kigali, the new airport is slated for completion by the end of 2026.

Upon completion, the airport will feature a 130,000-square-meter main terminal building that can initially handle 8 million passengers annually. This capacity is anticipated to expand to over 14 million passengers annually, as per Aviation Travel and Logistics (ATL), a government-owned holding company overseeing aviation-related activities.

Additionally, the airport will include a cargo terminal that can accommodate 150,000 tons of cargo each year.

Jules Ndenga, the CEO of ATL, underscored that the new airport would solidify Rwanda's position as a critical African hub and stimulate national and regional economic growth.
